As the popularity of mountain biking in New Zealand grows, so does the list of trails available to ride. The Kaimanawa Forest is located in the heart of the North Island and is most well known to Hikers and Hunters and now there is a shift towards mountain biking. There is a little for everyone in this huge natural space from gentle river trails like the Tree Trunk Trail to epic high country adventures on the Te Iringa Trail.
Riding in the native NZ forest is hard to beat. Hero dirt combined with loamy Beach leaf litter and prolific birdlife makes for an incredible experience. Such great things don't come without putting in the hard yards. There are sections of this 19km trail that require you to carry your bike because of heavy erosion from streams, windfall or stairs. But believe us, it is all worth it!
The ride can be done in two days where we stay at Oamaru Hut, but usually we will just do it in one day as an out and back that includes two spectacular descents. The out and back takes you to Tikitiki Stream, gives you enough hike a bike, some interesting traversing, outstanding views of Tongariro National Park and Lake Taupo, and of course two amazing descents with some flowy single track in between.
This is one of New Zealand's true wilderness rides and when the team is up for it we love taking people out there to experience it.
